In the early 2000’s there was a push to extend LED technology to the outdoor lighting sector by means of free-form primary optics which could produce Type I, II, III, VSquare and other custom light distributions by means of NURBS, lobed lens structure. Extended Free-Form optical technology from IM (US patent# 8,310,481) overcomes these lobed lens structure limitations constrained to quad NURBS topology, allowing for the control of light with unprecedented precision into custom 3-d intensity functions with fine structure for sharp cut-off, custom illuminance figure projection, and even the projection of high resolution images.
